Appointments

Visiting Assistant Professor of Music Theory, 2022 to 2024, through the end of Fall 2024.

Adjunct Instructor of Music Theory, 2016 to 2022.

Both appointments were part-time. I held graduate faculty status as a part-time faculty member, which is what made the seminar teaching and the committee work possible.

You can't teach species counterpoint to twenty-year-olds twice a week for eight years and keep writing carelessly. That's the part that actually changed the music. A classroom is unforgiving in a way an audience never is.

Courses taught

Nine distinct courses, from the first semester a music major takes up to graduate seminars.

MUS 707, Music Analysis in Relation to Performance. Graduate seminar.

MUS 706, Twentieth- and Twenty-First-Century Techniques. Graduate seminar on rhythm, form, nonserial atonality, serialism, ordered segments and chance music.

MUS 401 and 501, Counterpoint, undergraduate and graduate.

MUS 408, Form and Analysis.

MUS 213, music theory and aural training.

MUS 201 and 202, second-year music theory and aural training.

MUS 101 and 102, first-year music theory and aural training, taught from The Musical Core, which I wrote for these two courses.

Curriculum built for the university

The Musical Core, the online course for MUS 101 and MUS 102. I wrote the textbook, the drills, the quizzes and the full curriculum, designed for online delivery. The text was published by Kendall Hunt and is in use at UNLV, Scottsdale Community College and elsewhere. It carried a $2,000 curriculum development award in August 2018.

The online placement examination in aural skills and theory for incoming undergraduate and graduate students. Developed and implemented.

Lecture series

The Musical Core 101 and 102, 31 lectures, from the development of the staff system through seventh chords.

Western Music Theory, 20 lectures on first-year theory.

Ear Training Supplemental Materials, 13 lectures of prescribed exercises.

Sixteenth-Century Counterpoint, 5 lectures on two-part counterpoint, first through fourth species.

Twentieth- and Twenty-First-Century Techniques, 5 graduate seminars.

Courses built since

The university work didn't stop when the appointment did. Flawless Ear Training, a sixteen-unit daily program built on audiation. The Composing Hour, a masterclass series running as a year-long sequence. Counterpoint for Composers, sixteen lectures from melody through fugue, with invertible counterpoint workshops and species rule sheets after Fux. Form and Analysis: The Composer's Perspective. Western Music Theory. The Craft of Music Composition. Audiation Essentials. The Practice Room. Ear Training for Babies.

These are taught through UreMusic, which is the teaching side of the work. This site is the composing side. They were always the same job.
